By the end of the class, you will have a broad experience of the world of theatre. We study the history of theatre and theatre production throughout the world and look at examples of plays from different cultures. During the course, we read several plays, some of which you perform in class. We write our own scenes and monologues and look at how a play is put together. Everyone performs in this class, multiple times. Your biggest performances will be a modern scene, a modern monologue, and your play production project. We look at technical theatre – lights, sets, sound, makeup, and costume. You learn to review plays. We will consider what it is like to be a professional artist today and how the skills we learn in theatre can help us in the rest of our lives. Your biggest challenge for the year will be a play production project - when you, working with your fellow classmates, will produce a full length play.

All about Dr. Menjivar (MEN-GEE-VAR or Dr. M)
I graduated from the University of Southern California (Fight on!) with a doctorate in educational leadership in 2016. My research focused on educational technology in k-12 settings. I have taught grades 1-12 for the past 11 years and I am also the founder of a children’s theatre program in Los Angeles, California that has been producing musicals for ten years. I have worked as a creative director, technical director, stage manager, and technical crew in theatre for many years.
I decided to go into education because it the greatest field in the world! It is an amazing feeling to know that I am part of the learning process with my students. Everyday brings about exciting teaching moments. Through my experience, I believe students learn best when they explore their interest within a classroom culture of inquiry. I strive everyday to ensure that my student’s curriculum achieves the “Three E’s” educational, engaging, and exciting. I am a life long learner who loves to read, write and research.
On a personal note, I have a wonderful husband and two beautiful children. On my spare time, I enjoy hiking, fishing, watching sports, theatre, films, camping, and spending time with family and friends.
I am excited to belong to the St. Mary’s Catholic School family!
