Film Studies is a course that critques films and produces them. Storytelling is the most common way that we communicate to one another. Stories told with film have a tremendous influence on our attitudes and perceptions of the world around us. In fact, films may be one of the most powerful tools in modern culture for shaping values and conveying information. By viewing, studying, discussing and writing about film, students develop and demonstrate skills in technological, cultural, and media literacy, as well as critical thinking and problem solving - skills that will serve them well in the real world. Students will also produce one film alone and one film in collaborative film crews.

All about Dr. Menjivar (MEN-GEE-VAR or Dr. M)
I graduated from the University of Southern California (Fight on!) with a doctorate in educational leadership in 2016. My research focused on educational technology in k-12 settings. I have taught grades 1-12 for the past 11 years and I am also the founder of a children’s theatre program in Los Angeles, California that has been producing musicals for ten years. I also worked on TV shows and music videos immediately graudating from the USC School of Cinema and Television production program in 2001. I have worked as a production assistant and a 1st Assistant Director.
I decided to go into education because it the greatest field in the world! It is an amazing feeling to know that I am part of the learning process with my students. Everyday brings about exciting teaching moments. Through my experience, I believe students learn best when they explore their interest within a classroom culture of inquiry. I strive everyday to ensure that my student’s curriculum achieves the “Three E’s” educational, engaging, and exciting. I am a life long learner who loves to read, write and research.
On a personal note, I have a wonderful husband and two beautiful children. On my spare time, I enjoy hiking, fishing, watching sports, theatre, films, camping, and spending time with family and friends.
I am excited to belong to the St. Mary’s Catholic School family!
