On Thursday, May 6th St. Mary's Catholic School celebrates May Crowning with a new statue of our Blessed Mother.
Mary Ann and Phil Everett helped to build our new Mary Grotto. Phil and Mary Ann were instrumental in bringing Mary to our campus and creating a beautiful space. Jim Oakes and Steve Loos also assisted with the concrete base.
As a tradition, the 8th Grade girls helped with Crowning of Mary. Each year essays are submitted to determine who will crown Mary and this year Vanessa Pink wrote an amazing essay.
What does catholic education mean to you?
What does Catholic education mean to you? This is a question that I have thought about a lot in the last week. After all, when you are my age you have many opportunities to think about. So I went to my sister to ask her what she thought and I asked my brother because we have all had catholic education. They both had different opinions than mine. So I sat down to type and I asked myself the question again. Catholic education is more than just religion class with Mr. Smith it is bigger than the classroom and wider than the church. I first thought of the obvious things.
Things like volunteering all these year for service hours for religion class. Then I thought about the extra activities like being a shadow and telling others about my school. And the more I thought about it and I realized that even though I felt I was being forced to volunteer for a grade at the time, I actually enjoyed working with the little kids at sports camp and fine arts camp or when we came to the Vacation bible school and we got to take photos of the camp activities. Catholic education is not just about books and paper and pencils and tests and deadlines it is what follows you outside the doors of the school and the classroom. Catholic education is the good things you do when no one is watching you. It is when you sit in your room and pray for that stranger that you saw at the Drs office that makes your problems seem small. Catholic education is what you wish that all kids your age had because they do not understand what they are missing.
Although I will leave these halls I will never forget the lessons that I have learned here. Mr. Smith tells us you don't have to like everyone but you have to love everyone. At first I do not think that I thought about this very much but lately I have thought about it a lot. So I do what I should and ask myself what would Jesus do? And I also ask myself what would a St Marys Student do that was taught better, that knows to do better, be better.
So again, What does catholic education mean to me? Strive to do your best in your education and in your life even when no one is watching.
